7 Natural Home Remedies every Mom Should know About

As a Mama/Mom, you’ll wear many hats at home and especially the hat of doctor when your kid, hubby or partner gets sick. Ditch some of those chemical laden products and try a more natural and holistic approach. Of course if the natural products are not working - don’t hesitate to call your primary care doctor. But before your doctor there may be products in your house that can be used to alleviate and sometimes help with some of the common ailments. These home remedies are not only proven to be effective, but they are also very inexpensive and come with none of the side effects that you will get from traditional medicines.

Lemons

Lemons are rich in Vitamin C which make them good for your health and well-being. Combine lemon or you can opt for lemon juice with warm water This makes an amazing remedy capable of curing a wide variety of ailments, from nausea, heartburn, indigestion, stress and depression.

If you have little ones, they will have cold like symptoms - coughing or runny nose during the winter. Use a mixture of lemon, honey and water, a teaspoon of this combination boost their immune system and helps the body to fight cold and flu. (Do not give honey to children under 1 year of age.)

Steam Bath

Enjoying a steam bath is not only a luxury that will help you relax but it also has several health benefits as well. Your heart works harder and faster when your body is submerged in hot water and this helps improve your blood circulation. One study reports that people with heart conditions will find that regularly soaking in a warm steam bath help lower their blood pressure.

Warm steam baths are an excellent remedy for babies who have the common cold or is colicky. The steam relieves stuffiness and congestion and helps soothe them to sleep.

Garlic

Garlic is not very tasty when eaten alone but it is an incredibly effective remedy for many illnesses. Garlic has immune boosting allicin which is known to prevent and cure the common cold. Consuming garlic regularly will reduce your blood pressure, improves cholesterol and stabilize your vascular system.

Chop or crush 1-2 gloves of fresh garlic and “steep” them in hot water, use a strainer to separate the liquid then add honey. Then take/give a teaspoon through the day this helps to alleviate cold and flu like symptoms. You may need a tad more honey then garlic, so that your little one can tolerate the taste. (Again, no honey to children under 1 year of age)

Baking Soda

Baking soda is a common item that’s a staple in most kitchens. Look for the ones specifically labeled to be used in a refrigerator. Place an open box in your refrigerator to neutralize odors, but it does more than just help with odors. It's used as a remedy for a variety of other issues.

Here are a few of the ways that you can use baking soda as a natural remedy:

  • Mix it with water and use it as a natural breath freshener.

  • Add a little bit of baking soda to your toothpaste to whiten your teeth.

  • Mix 3 parts of baking soda with 1 part of water and rub it on your skin to exfoliate.

  • Mix it with water to relieve mosquito bites

Salt Water

Salt water flushes have been used for centuries to detox and cleanse the body. People who do regular salt water flushes say that it helps to clean the intestines and colon, the stomach and also the digestive track. Mix a quarter teaspoon salt with 1 cup warm water as a saline nasal spray. Using a syringe and spray a few drops into your kid's nostrils to clear up runny mucus cause by colds.

Ice Cubes

Ice cubes are a great natural remedy for reducing inflammation. If you have slip and fall or have a bruise good old ice cubes to the rescue. Simply apply some ice covered in a washcloth to the affected area, the pain and inflammation reduces rapidly. Ice cubes can also be used to reduce achy, tired eyes. Cover some ice cubes with a washcloth and put them on your eyes for about 15 minutes. Your eyes should start feeling better immediately.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has very powerful medicinal properties and it can be used as a remedy for conditions ranging from heart disease to eczema. Coconut oil is great for you skin, it’s a natural remedy for babies who have eczema, by applying a thin layer to affected area. It will soothe any itching and pain caused by eczema outbreaks. You can find coconut oil in two of our products - in our nipple and perineal balm. We use coconut oil because it moisturizes the skin especially while breastfeeding. It has antibacterial properties that help prevent infections by creating a barrier that blocks bacteria from causing more damage. And last but not least coconut oil soothes and reduces swelling of perineal tissue - a benefit of our perineal balm.
